Version 2.1 (November 2017)

Release Notes tell you what’s new in Academic. As always, we welcome your feedback. You can also file a bug report. Want to update to this version? Refer to the update guide in conjunction with the parameter changes mentioned in the Breaking Changes section below.

See what’s new in Academic!

Welcome to the upcoming release of Academic. There are a number of updates in this version that we hope you will like, including:

  • Add dark theme
  • Enable your site to be installed to the home screen of a mobile device, providing users with quicker access and a richer experience
    • For example, if viewing this site in Chrome for Android on a mobile device, press the Chrome settings icon in the top right corner, press Add to home screen - a native-like app for the website will be installed to your home screen. A similar process can be followed for other mobile browsers such as Firefox Mobile.
  • Enable modern web browsers to automatically load localized version of content in multilingual sites
  • Add OpenStreetMap-based alternative to Google Maps (#360)
  • Add option to hide/show talk time
  • Display tags (if set) for all content types (not only for blog posts!)
  • Improve social sharing by adding Twitter and Open Graph metadata to pages
  • Re-enable RSS output by default (can be disabled in config)

Dark theme.

Note that this version is still in development and has only been partially published so far. The latest committed changes can be found below. Remember to check back later when the final version of 2.1.0 will be published and this page will be updated to reflect the full changes.

Breaking changes

Here are some considerations to make when updating Academic from the previous version, v2:

Content pages

  • Display tags (if set) for all content types (not only for blog posts!)
  • Publication: Fix bold font not being applied to metadata row headings
  • Add option to hide/show talk time
  • Add time_format variable for customizing talk time

Themes

  • Add dark theme

Widgets

  • Project widget: Fix project filter buttons (#362)
  • About widget:
    • Add OpenStreetMap-based alternative to Google Maps (#360)
    • Add support for linking to forum/chat/mailing-list

Other

  • Enable your site to be installed to the home screen of a mobile device, providing users with quicker access and a richer experience
  • Enable modern web browsers to automatically load localized version of content in multilingual sites
  • Re-enable RSS output by default (can be disabled in config)
  • Add Twitter card and Open Graph metadata
